In a tragic incident, daring armed robbers targeted students' residences at Gateway Polytechnic, Sapaade, in Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State. The attack resulted in one fatality and left nine others injured.

The assailants reportedly struck as students were leaving the campus in Ipara, Ode-Remo, and Isara. This incident follows recent security concerns, with students having been victims of previous attacks, including cases of rape that led to protests and a temporary closure of the school.

Over a week ago, the school management shut down the institution in response to student protests against the rape of their female colleagues. The State Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alamutu, had previously engaged with student leaders to address the prevailing security challenges.

According to a source, the robbers invaded students' hostels at Ode around 3 a.m., launching a violent attack. The Lafuri area of Ode-Remo witnessed the tragic event, leaving a former student dead and nine others injured, including a landlord.

In a disturbing video that circulated online, the students' hostel exhibited the aftermath of the attack, with bullet-riddled windows, doors, and walls.

A senior lecturer at the polytechnic, preferring anonymity, confirmed the incident, stating that six people were shot, resulting in one fatality. Expressing concern about the security situation, the lecturer noted, "It is quite unfortunate that the government has deviated from the agreement between the state and citizens. Protection of lives and property is nothing to write home about in this country where our environment is not left out."

As of the time of reporting, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, had not responded to calls and messages.

Meanwhile, the student union of the polytechnic expressed a vote of no confidence in Governor Dapo Abiodun, citing dissatisfaction with the administration's response to security challenges in students' communities. The statement signed by Olatunji Idowu Alexander, President of the Students’ Union (SUG), criticized what they described as unfulfilled promises and inadequate attention to security concerns.

The continuous security lapses have led to cases of rape, theft, killing of students, robbery, assault, and property destruction, according to the student union. The students have voiced their loss of confidence in the administration's commitment to their safety.
