The Rivers State University has held its 121st Inaugural Lecture, highlighting the profound role of language and literature in shaping human understanding and societal development.

The lecture, titled “The Career of Rough Beasts: Language, Literature, and the Development of our Common Humanity,” was delivered on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at the University’s Senate Chamber by Professor Isaac Ngulube, a renowned scholar of English Linguistics.
In his thought-provoking presentation, Professor Ngulube examined the intricate relationship between language, literature, identity, and culture, emphasizing how they collectively contribute to the evolution of human consciousness and the strengthening of social bonds.
He also unveiled two groundbreaking linguistic models — the Linguistic Goethe-Grid and Lambda Theory — both developed to tackle translation complexities and enhance the global appreciation and preservation of indigenous languages.

The Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, commended Professor Ngulube for delivering an intellectually rich and inspiring lecture. He praised the don’s outstanding contributions to linguistic research and his dedication to promoting academic excellence and human development.
The event was attended by Principal Officers of the University, former Vice-Chancellors and Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Professors, Traditional Rulers, and other distinguished guests who gathered to celebrate scholarship and intellectual achievement at the institution.
