Sam Maris University VC Urges Students to Shun Internet Fraud, Cultism, and Drug Addiction
Prof Ayodeji Gbore, Vice-Chancellor of Sam Maris University, delivered a keynote address at a conference urging students to steer clear of internet fraud, cultism, and drug addiction.
Prof Ayodeji Gbore, the Vice-Chancellor of Sam Maris University, has issued a stern warning to students across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, urging them to steer clear of the perils of internet fraud, cultism, and drug addiction. Speaking at the 5th Annual Conference of the Association of Deans of Student Affairs in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria (ADOSATIN) held at the Royal Dream Hotels in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, Prof Gbore emphasized the importance of continuous orientation and enlightenment to combat these societal ills.

Identifying various root causes such as peer pressure, parental background, societal moral decay, erosion of educational standards, and socioeconomic factors, Prof Gbore expressed concern over the deep-seated influence of these vices on students. He lamented the transformation of prestigious institutions into breeding grounds for criminals and social misfits, attributing this trend to the glamorization of vices in modern society.
The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the interconnected nature of internet fraud, drug addiction, and cultism, emphasizing that individuals often engage in all three simultaneously, leading to a disruptive lifestyle that affects both themselves and their peers. He criticized the normalization of these vices and the failure of some parents to instill societal values in their children, contributing to the perpetuation of the problem.

Prof Gbore underscored the crucial role of Deans of Student Affairs in addressing these challenges. He urged them to formulate and enforce policies, implement disciplinary measures, promote constructive extracurricular activities, and foster strong town-gown relationships to tackle the menace effectively.
In conclusion, Prof Gbore called upon Deans of Student Affairs nationwide to lead the charge against drug addiction, cultism, and internet fraud, and maintain orderliness among students, ensuring a conducive learning environment for all.
