Senior Lecturer Resigns from ASUU, Cites Lack of Transparency and Inclusiveness

Dr. Philips Nto, a senior lecturer at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State, has resigned from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) due to alleged lack of transparency and inclusiveness in the union's administration.

Dr. Nto cited the union's lack of transparency in the disbursement of the Earned Academic Allowance, where he was shortchanged and paid only N267,992, while his counterparts received between N800,000 to N1 million.

He accused the union leadership of using the association to truncate the career progression of some members, citing a personal case where the union wrote a petition against his promotion to the rank of professor.

Dr. Nto expressed regret that the union has been hijacked by self-centered individuals who run it like a cult group, treating some members like outcasts.

Dr. Nto had recently resumed from secondment at Abia State College of Education Technical, Arochukwu, and was granted a promotion to the level of Professor by the university management, which the union rejected through a petition.

The resignation highlights internal contradictions within ASUU and raises concerns about the union's ability to effectively represent its members. ASUU's role in Nigerian higher education is crucial, advocating for better funding, infrastructure, academic freedom, and staff welfare.
