The Delta State government has sent a strong warning to students of Tertiary Institutions who  engage in cultism, drug abuse, prostitution and other social vices to desist from them or face dire consequences. 

The  Governor of Delta State, Rtn. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori gave the warning during a one day Awareness/ Sensitization Campaign on Dangers of Cultism, Drug Abuse, Prostitution and other Social Vices held at University of Delta Agbor.

The Governor who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Barr. ThankGod Harry  said students have nothing to gain from such vices, and charged them to focus on their studies  in order to graduate with outstanding results.

In an address, the Vice Chancellor of University of Delta Agbor, Prof. Stella Chiemeke said the program was timely, pointing  out that UNIDEL maintained zero tolerance on such activities.

She however, reminded the students especially the new ones to focus only on their studies while in UNIDEL as the law does not provide an avenue for any misconduct which would  attract severe punishment.

The organizer of the event  and Executive Assistant to the Governor of Delta State on Students Affairs, Comrd. Okoh Ezekiel Oghenetega said the event was a clarion call to everyone to confront the social challenges that threaten the youths particularly in higher institution and the country at large.

He stated that the issue of social vices in Nigeria was highly alarming adding that cases such as drug abuse, cultism, sex for marks, prostitution, kidnapping, robbery, indecent dressing, political thuggery, rape, and premarital sexual activities are very common in the society.

He pointed out that the campaign against various forms of social vices was aimed  at beaming a spotlight on the ugly development in order  to provide the students with the tools and resources they need to navigate  through the temptations and pressures they face.

He commended the state Governor, Rtn. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori the chairman of the occasion, Dr Hillary Obi lbegbulem, the Managing Director of DESOPADEC , chief Festus Ochonohor  for their contributions towards the organization of the program.

The guest speaker, Prof.Engr. Hillary Owamah x- rayed the factors that led to students involvement in cultism, drug abuse, prostitution and other social vices.

He underscored the importance of knowledge and character in the life of students especially on campus.

He stressed that academic excellence cannot be achieved when engaged in social vices and enjoined the  students to give less time to the social media.
