Teacher Injured as Primary School Building Collapses in Rivers State
A deteriorating primary school building in Oyorokoto, a riverine community in the Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, partially collapsed on Tuesday, leaving a teacher injured. The incident occurred at the Community Primary School, Oyorokoto, while the teacher was conducting a lesson.
Eyewitnesses said a section of the aging structure gave way without warning, sparking panic among pupils and staff. Local news outlet Connect Andoni reported that the school building had long been in a state of neglect.
Despite clear structural risks, teachers reportedly continued using the facility due to a lack of alternatives and their determination to keep education accessible in the underserved community.
The injured teacher, whose identity has not been disclosed, is said to have remained committed to teaching despite the unsafe conditions.
Following the collapse, residents are urgently appealing to the Rivers State Government and education authorities to intervene. They are calling for the immediate renovation of the school to prevent future tragedies.
