TETFund Awards N761 Million Doctoral Scholarships to Twelve Lecturers for Studies in France

TETFund Awards N761 Million Doctoral Scholarships to Twelve Lecturers for Studies in France

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has allocated scholarships totaling N761 million to twelve Nigerian lecturers, enabling them to pursue doctoral degree programs in science-related disciplines in France.

Speaking at a pre-departure briefing for the scholars in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc Sonny Echono, revealed that the scholarships were granted under the TETFund Scholarship for Academic Staff Intervention (TSAS) program. This initiative aims to provide financial support to lecturers from public tertiary institutions in Nigeria who are pursuing postgraduate studies.

Echono emphasized that the scholarship recipients, selected from eight beneficiary institutions, were approved by the management of TETFund as part of Cohort 1. The funds, amounting to N63,457,600.40 or € 77,862.16 per scholar for the three-year duration of the program, were disbursed in accordance with the agreement between TETFund and Campus France.

The scholars will undertake postgraduate programs of national priority at various universities in France, including Universite Paris-Est Creteil (UPEC), University of Strasbourg, Universite de Lorraine (L.G.IPM), Universite Claude Bernard, Lyon 1, Universite Lyon 2, Cancer Research Centre of Lyon, and Institut Superieur D’Electronique de Paris.

During the briefing, Echono urged the scholars to serve as good ambassadors of Nigeria, maximize their opportunities for research collaboration, and contribute to the development of the Nigerian research and development sector. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the guidelines and regulations set forth by TETFund and avoiding any activities that could tarnish the reputation of the Nigerian government.

The Director of Academic Staff Training and Development at TETFund, Muhammed Garba, highlighted the purpose of the pre-departure briefing, which was to familiarize the scholars with TETFund's guidelines, the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), and their responsibilities as sponsored scholars.

Laura Moras, the Manager of Campus France, Nigeria, commended the efficient implementation of the agreement between TETFund and Campus France, providing orientation to the scholars on travel logistics and documentation requirements.The scholarships, funded by TETFund, signify a significant investment in the capacity-building of Nigerian academics and the promotion of international research collaboration in science-related fields.
