Sickle cell disease is inherited and characterized by the production of abnormal, misshapen red blood cells that can block blood flow and lead to pain and organ damage. Common symptoms include intense pain episodes, chronic fatigue, and increased susceptibility to infections. Effective management of the condition often involves pain relief measures, regular blood transfusions, and specific medications.

Elemide Daniel, the House Secretary of the University of Ibadan Students' Union, emphasized the importance of understanding sickle cell disease to break the stigma and foster empathy within the community. "By learning more about SCD and supporting those affected, we take crucial steps towards creating a compassionate and inclusive campus environment," he stated.
