UI Vice-Chancellor Charges New Student Union Leaders to Uphold Excellence and Service
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, has affirmed his deep understanding of the university’s unique spirit, describing it as one that demands the highest standards of excellence.

He made the remarks at the inauguration of the new Students’ Union Executive Committee.
Professor Adebowale, who began his academic journey at UI in 1980 as an undergraduate in Chemistry and has since risen through the ranks from graduate assistant to professor, Dean of Science, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and now Vice-Chancellor, reminded the incoming leaders that the saying, “if it is from Ibadan, it must be of outstanding quality,” should guide their tenure.
He stressed that the inauguration represents a solemn transition of responsibility, with the new executive carrying the mandate of over 45,000 students. Key priorities outlined for the administration include championing academic excellence, advocating for student welfare, fostering innovation and sustainable development, and ensuring peace, security, and unity on campus. The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that leadership is about service, diligence, and constructive engagement, urging the team to act with integrity, transparency, and accountability.
Outgoing SU President Mr. Covenant Odedele reflected on his tenure, describing leadership at UI SU as a demanding role requiring sacrifice, resilience, and courage. He highlighted that the union’s purpose is student welfare and stressed the importance of ensuring every policy, program, or decision benefits the largest possible number of students. Odedele expressed gratitude to students for the opportunity to serve and advised his successor to exercise prudence in leadership.
Incoming SU President Mr. Temidayo Adeboye affirmed that the UI SU is a principled institution built on character and responsibility. He acknowledged the contributions of previous leaders in strengthening unionism and pledged to collaborate with university management to deliver sustainable, people-centered solutions to student challenges.

The oath of office was administered by Registrar Mr. Ganiyu O. Saliu, with certificates of return presented by Deputy Registrar, Student Affairs Division, Mr. Suleiman Oyewumi to the eight newly elected executive members:

- Salawu Durojaiye Glory – Vice President
- Shontan Joshua Olusola – General Secretary
- Esiele Fidelia Egbongbon – Assistant General Secretary
- Odey John Onah – Treasurer
- Tifase Oluwatimileyin – House Secretary
- Awofadeju Olasunkanmi Alabi – Public Relations Officer
- Siyanbade Adedamola Olalekan – Sports Secretary

The event also included the swearing-in of 116 Student Representative Council members, representing various constituencies across the university.
