UI@75 Legacy: N200m Scholarship Fund Launched for Students

The University of Ibadan (UI) has reaped significant rewards from its 75th-anniversary celebration, with the establishment of a N200 million scholarship fund for students.
During the inauguration of the board of the N200 million-Martins Ifeonukwu Etuokwu Scholarship Fund in the office of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale emphasized the crucial role of alumni in the sustainable development of tertiary institutions. He highlighted the reliance of universities in other countries on alumni support for sustainability, rather than solely depending on the government.

The newly-inaugurated board, chaired by Professor Olawale E. Ogunkola, consists of members such as Mr. Sunday N. Fagbesan, Mr. Ganiu O. Saliu, Mr. Adewuyi Popoola, Professor Abiodun Folawewo, Professor Adekeye Abiona, and Mrs. Odunola O. Etuokwu.

Professor Peter O. Olapegba, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and chairman of the UI @75 committee, described the inauguration of the board as a significant milestone for the University of Ibadan. He highlighted the committee's goal of attracting benefactions to the institution, achieved through designating alumni as ambassadors and friends as ambassadors extraordinaire.
The scholarship fund, donated by RAMS Charity Foundation in honor of a second-generation alumnus, aims to promote academic excellence and support indigent students. It will be managed by the inaugurated board, which will advise the university on investment opportunities, ensuring that proceeds are awarded as scholarships to students.
Professor Ogunkola, the chairman/convener of the board, emphasized the importance of maintaining the fund's value while delivering expected outcomes, given the current economic situation in the country. He assured fair and diligent management of the fund, with a robust investment policy and careful consideration of donor desires and student needs.
