The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, has announced that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has recognized the institution for having the highest number of female professors in the country.

Prof. Obi made the disclosure during a visit from the NUC Accreditation Team at the Council Chamber of the university. She highlighted that UNICAL is committed to fostering gender inclusivity and providing equal opportunities for both male and female academics, who are all dedicated to maintaining high standards of quality in education and research.

“This recognition reflects the commitment of our female academics who are excelling alongside their male counterparts,” said Prof. Obi. “We are a gender-friendly and gender-sensitive institution, and we will continue to support and empower all our staff.”

The Vice Chancellor also emphasized that the ongoing accreditation exercise is an essential peer review process that takes place annually. She assured the accreditation team that the university was fully prepared for the exercise.

Prof. Surajudeen Junaid, Prof. Malachy Okueze, and Prof. Abolude David, who spoke on behalf of the accreditation teams, explained that the mission was to assess the university's facilities and determine if they meet NUC standards. They clarified that the purpose of the visit was not to criticize but to offer constructive advice.

Programs undergoing accreditation include Philosophy, Religious & Cultural Studies, Medical Laboratory Science, Fisheries & Aquaculture, and Christian & Religious Studies. The accreditation process will ensure that the university continues to offer quality education and maintains its status as a leading institution in the country.
