UNICAL VC Commends Women Group for Seeking To Promote Gender-Based Initiatives
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi has commended the 100 Women Lobby Group and Change Managers International for seeking to promote gender-based initiatives that could foster unity, peace and development in the institution.

Prof. Obi made the commendation when the 100 Women Lobby Group and Change Managers International paid a courtesy visit to her office recently.
The University Helmsman said the institution will always key into any initiative that seeks to tackle gender-based violence, even as she declared her commitment to working with the group to nip the menace in the bud.
She assured the group of maximum support, stressing that the institution has quality and committed staff that are ready to work with them.
Her words, " Despite the laxity and nonchalant attitude of some members of Staff, I can assure you that we still have a quality and committed staff that are ready to work with you to impart knowledge and ensure that students achieve their academic dreams.

"I am happy that you are here to support the work of the present administration by empowering and sensitizing both staff and students of the University on gender issues. This administration is gender sensitive, we have taught girls who they are and who they need to be."
Prof Florence Obi stated that Unical through the Center for Gender Studies has developed a gender policy which is yet to be ratified and domesticated due to the absence of a Governing Council.
While encouraging girls to always speak up against any form of victimization, she said the institution has a Youth Friendly Center that has gained support from other local and international bodies, adding that, there have been a lot of sensitization and campaigns against gender-based violence.
The Vice Chancellor said the institution remains resolute and committed to wiping out gender-based violence, adding, "We have sensitized and empowered a group of young students in the Sociology Department who have been at the forefront of tackling gender-based violence".
The President of the 100 Women Lobby Group and Change Managers International, Mrs. Felicia Onibon said the goals and objectives of the group are to enhance gender equality and development, promote access to quality education, community and rural development, conflict resolution, as well as, promote positive family values and peace.
She said they are organizing a 10-day programme to educate and sensitize staff and students on gender-based violence.
The President said the group also seeks to educate girls on how to dress decently and comport themselves with dignity and respect.

She said for the sustainability of the programme, they will be working with the College of Medical Sciences, Faculties of Education, Guidance and Counseling Unit, Sociology Department and the Security Department.
