UNICAL DEANSHIP: VC Commends Out-Gone Dean, Charges Successor to Perform Better

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has commended the out-gone Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Joe Duke II for the successes recorded during his tenure as Dean, charging his successor, Prof. Bassey Eyo Bassey to perform even better by pursuing the interest and desires of the Faculty.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has commended the out-gone Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof. Joe Duke II for the successes recorded during his tenure as Dean, charging his successor, Prof. Bassey Eyo Bassey to perform even better by pursuing the interest and desires of the Faculty.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Eno Grace Nta, the Vice Chancellor gave the charge during a brief inauguration/hand over ceremony held at the MBA Hall of the Faculty.

Prof Florence Obi congratulated Prof. Duke II for successfully completing his second tenure commending him for the gigantic strides recorded noting that posterity will record them as part of his lasting legacies.

Describing the hand over ceremony as novel, the Vice Chancellor had this to say, "this is the first time I'm witnessing a predecessor presenting handover notes to his successor".

The University helmsman expressed appreciation of the Out-gone Dean's transparency in every action, especially, as it relates to the establishment of New programmes, linkages, Accreditation and Staff welfare, with regards to promotions, even to the rank of professors in the faculty.

She lauded Prof. Duke II for what she described as an epoch making event which takes place every two years in the faculty acknowledging his efforts and good thoughts put into the Faculty's development.

This is even as the University Administrator admonished the in-coming Dean, Prof. Bassey Eyo Bassey and Sub-Dean Dr. Hilary Adie expressing her delight to inaugurate them and the belief that they will continue in the sustenance of linkages with foreign bodies which will translate to the upliftment of staff and make the faculty grow and get even better.

In an earlier remark, the outgone Dean, Prof. Joe Duke II expressed his appreciation to all members of staff for attending the inauguration which he defined as a simple process of handing over power of leadership to another, even as he thanked staff of the Faculty of Management Sciences for their cooperation over the last six years in which he served as the Dean of the faculty.

Prof Duke said, for every thing he has been able to achieve in his tenure as Dean, he cannot thank members of staff enough for their unalloyed cooperation and support, adding that, where he stopped should be a starting point for his successor, this is even as he apologized to any member of staff he might have offended.

 He urged the incoming Dean to do better in order to keep the image of the Faculty clean, stressing that integrity is key, because he will be held accountable for the success and failure of the faculty, saying when any department fails, he (the Dean) is the one that has failed.

He advised the new Dean to be focused on all his dealings, adding that, leadership is not all about being the boss but serving and taking care of people, lifting and helping them realize their goals, doing what is right and also propagating the truth, saying, he believes within the next two years, the new leadership would have added more and more value to the faculty.

 in his acceptance speech, the new Dean, Prof. Bassey Eyo Bassey thanked all members of the faculty for the opportunity to serve, adding that, the elections have come and gone and it is the time to work together as a family.

Prof. Bassey appealed to staff to remain as one family, acknowledging them as distinguished professional colleagues.Prof. Bassey noted that leadership is about loving before carrying people along, adding that, his administration will be an all inclusive one that would be leveraging on their support, even as he solicited for maximum cooperation from members of staff so as to move the Faculty forward.

The well attended event had in attendance key Faculty staff including Professors, Heads of Departments, Programme Coordinators and the Faculty Officer, Dr. (Mrs) Cornelia Ansa.
