The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has been left wowed and amazed by the practicals conducted by the Home Economics Department of the institution for her final year students.

Represented by the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Omoogun Ajayi, the Vice Chancellor expressed her amazement during a practical exhibition by the final year students at the Creche section of the department recently.The University helmsman lauded the staff of the Department for their tireless and relentless effort towards ensuring that the students are armed not just theoretically, but also, practically.

Prof Obi lauded the students for their hard work, even as she congratulated them for being entrepreneurs who will no longer need to wait for white-collar jobs but should be themselves, employers of labour.

The Vice-Chancellor urged the Department to ensure they make their work more visible, to enable the entire community to be aware of their products.

This is even as she assured the Department of her readiness to give them all the necessary support they may need to promote such innovative events

In a remark, the Dean of Vocational and Science Education, Prof. Cecilia Ekwueme expressed her excitement over the performance of the 29 graduating students of the Home Economics Department.

Prof. Ekwueme stated that the training is geared towards self-reliance, as well as, creating an avenue to showcase the many talents in the department.

She appealed that the University Community should avail itself of these skills to get high-quality products at a very reduced rate.

In her words, "a trial will convince you and you will not be disappointed."

Prof. Ekwueme also appreciated the Vice Chancellor for the massive support she has given to the Home Economics Department, especially, in terms of upgrade of infrastructure and relevant facilities.

On her part, the Head of the Department of Home Economics, Dr. Agnes Okute added that the department is ever ready to showcase the knowledge, skills, creativity and innovations for employability and global competitiveness.

She also said that besides what is on display, the students by their training are adept home managers, event managers and entrepreneurs groomed and nurtured for unlimited opportunities.

Dr. Okute used the occasion to thank the Vice Chancellor for her great support and for also providing the students with an enabling environment to practice, even as she commended her for the successful accreditation of the Faculty.

The event showcased the display of craft in diverse components of the practicals; food and nutrition, clothing and textile, as well as, home management.

The colourful event featured fashion modelling by the students in their self-made dresses.
