UNILAG and ICCON Forge Research Partnership to Enhance Chemical Practices

The Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) are set to collaborate on research development initiatives aimed at advancing chemical practices in Nigeria. This partnership was highlighted during a courtesy visit by ICCON to UNILAG's management on June 5, 2024. The National Vice President of ICCON, Majek Okunola Owoo, emphasized the focus on chemical identification and usage in their joint research efforts.

The visit preceded ICCON's 19th Mandatory Continued Professional Development (MCPD) Workshop, Induction, and Investiture, hosted by UNILAG from June 5 to June 6, 2024. The partnership aims to facilitate curriculum development, enhance teaching standards, and promote the application of Chemistry through continuous research engagement.

UNILAG's Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lucian Obinna Chukwu, commended ICCON's choice of Chemical Security and Safety as the theme for the workshop, particularly in light of Nigeria's challenges with the consumption of illicit herbal concoctions. He highlighted UNILAG's initiatives, particularly through the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development, and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS), in regulating herbal medicine practices in Nigeria.

Expressing gratitude for the partnership offer, Prof. Chukwu emphasized the potential for stronger collaboration between academia and industry, enhancing faculty skills, and expanding knowledge horizons. The subsequent MCPD Workshop, Induction, and Investiture ceremony at UNILAG's Tayo Aderinokun Hall further underscored the commitment to excellence in the field of chemistry.

Representing UNILAG's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola OON, FAS, Prof. Chukwu reiterated the importance of innovation and professional development to ensure chemical safety and security. He congratulated the new inductees and fellows of ICCON, encouraging continuous enhancement of professional development and excellence in the field of chemistry.

ICCON, established by Decree 91 of 1993, operates under the Federal Ministry of Health and is mandated to regulate the teaching, learning, and professional practice of Chemistry in Nigeria.
