The Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Lagos (UNILAG), successfully conducted a one-day Orientation/Refresher Programme for its academic staff on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. Held at the Faculty Lecture Theatre, the event revolved around the theme: “Enhancing Academic Excellence in the University of Lagos.”

In his opening address, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Adelaja Odukoya, emphasized the need for continuous professional growth. He described the programme as an opportunity for participants to “learn, unlearn, and relearn” to keep pace with evolving academic demands. Stressing the importance of innovation, he encouraged faculty members to embrace new methodologies and tools to provide rigorous and responsive education amidst global changes in higher education.

Training Highlights:
The programme featured expert facilitators who delivered insightful sessions on various aspects of academia:

  • Professor Olusoji Ilori, Director of the Academic Planning Unit, presented on “Navigating Institutional Policies and Procedures.” He discussed critical UNILAG policies, including those related to admissions, grading, plagiarism, and intellectual property. Prof. Ilori commended the Faculty for organizing the event and revealed plans to establish an Academic Development Unit within the university to institutionalize similar training initiatives.

  • Professor ‘Funmi Bammeke, Immediate Past Dean and Professor of Sociology, spoke on “Lecturer-Student Relationships.” She underscored the importance of maintaining professional, respectful, and supportive interactions with students.

  • Professor Olugbenga Akingbehin of the Faculty of Law addressed “Lecturers’ Responsibilities: Legal and Ethical Considerations,” highlighting the need for integrity and adherence to ethical practices in academic activities.

  • Dr. Gabriel Akinbode from the Department of Psychology focused on “Student Engagement Strategies and Evaluation Techniques.” He provided actionable tips on fostering active participation and fair assessment in classrooms.
