The University of Lagos (UNILAG) recently partnered with Continental Hotels to host a career talk aimed at preparing students for opportunities in the hospitality industry. The event, held on June 28, 2024, at the Faculty of Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, was organized by UNILAG's Office of Career Development Services (OCDS).

Students were introduced to various career paths in Hospitality Management, including Human Resources, Sales and Marketing, Resource Management, and Engineering. The session featured top officials from Continental Hotels, led by Group General Manager Karl Hala. Speakers emphasized passion as a crucial element for success in the hospitality sector.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, former Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, highlighted the vast potential in Nigeria's creative industry. He cited impressive revenue figures from 2020, including 1.2 trillion naira from hospitality and tourism, 140 billion naira from film making, and 300 billion naira from the music industry. Mohammed noted that the creative sector is the second-largest employer in Nigeria and a significant contributor to the country's economic and social development.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, affirmed the university's commitment to leveraging partnerships for student development and preparing them for future workforce demands. Dr. Ayodele Shittu, Coordinator of OCDS, reiterated the office's mission to provide career advisory services and opportunities through partnerships and masterclasses in soft skills.

Mohammed stressed that with strategic investments and supportive policies, Nigeria's creative industry could become a global powerhouse, driving innovation and socio-economic transformation. This initiative reflects UNILAG's dedication to fostering strategic partnerships and equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary for successful careers in various industries.
