UNILAG Workshop Unveils Insights on Nigeria's SME Sector and Global Value Chains

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) recently hosted a Stakeholders’ Engagement/Dissemination Workshop where the Development and Allied Policy Studies Research Cluster presented its findings on key socio-economic aspects of Nigeria's export-oriented Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Led by Professor Tajudeen Yusuf, the workshop focused on themes such as "Institutional Quality, SMEs Productivity, Global Value Chains Participation, and Export Intensity in Nigeria."
Professor Yusuf highlighted the pivotal role of SMEs in Nigeria's economy, underscoring their contribution to employment and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He identified challenges facing SMEs, including limited access to finance, inadequate infrastructure, high operating costs, and regulatory burdens. Emphasizing the interconnection of these challenges, he stressed the need for comprehensive reforms to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
The workshop also featured presentations on key findings and recommendations, emphasizing the importance of institutional quality in enhancing SME productivity and export intensity. Professor Olufemi Muibi Saibu, Director of INCDS-UNILAG, emphasized the significance of enhancing SME productivity for Nigeria's economic development.

Mr. Samuel Oluwole, representing the Acting Director of the Research Management Office, commended the success of the project and highlighted the workshop's role in fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
Participants engaged in discussions and shared insights on enhancing institutional quality, promoting SME growth, and increasing Nigeria's participation in global value chains. The event concluded with a call to action for stakeholders to implement the recommendations and strategies discussed.
