UNILORIN Chemistry Department gets American Chemical Society (ACS) recognition

The Department of Chemistry, University of Ilorin, has secured the official recognition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), having satisfied the world-renowned scientific society with the quality of its curriculum, impressive infrastructure and robust safety culture.

The University is the first institution in Nigeria and Africa to receive this kind of international accreditation.

A letter conveying the recognition to the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Prof. Modinat AbdulRaheem, and signed by the Programme Manager of the ACS Global Recognition Programme, Dr Wasiu A Lawal, stated that “upon full Committee approval, the Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry programme at the University of Ilorin will receive ACS Recognition as an institution that is aligned with the ACS Guidelines for International Chemistry Programmes”.

The letter, dated April 2, 2024, stated further that UNILORIN’s “curriculum in Chemistry was found to be more than sufficient to meet the requirements described in the international guidelines”.

The ACS Committee, therefore, encouraged the Department to “continue the current efforts being made to improve student outcomes in the undergraduate Chemistry programme”.

The ACS, a non-profit organisation that was established at New York University in 1876, is today recognised as the biggest international scientific group in the world.

In her reaction to the development, the Head of the Chemistry Department, Prof. AbdulRaheem, expressed her elation over the international recognition, attributing “the Department’s strong application to the sound and well-run curriculum, the number of internationally renowned Chemists and Researchers, the teaching and research facilities, and the supportive environment at the Department”

According to her, “the application procedure, which consists of numerous components and review phases, was quite rigorous, and the interview that followed was even more deeply engaging”.

Prof. AbdulRaheem expressed appreciation to the entire staff of the Department for the feat and particularly the Committee members, which include Prof. O. A. Ameen, Dr O. Atolani, Dr O. K. Yusuff, and Mr F. K. Olowe, for their resilience and breathtaking efforts.
