UNILORIN Launches Centres for Blue Economy and Gender Studies
The University of Ilorin has established new Centres for Blue and Regenerative Economy and Gender Studies to advance sustainable development and gender equality.
The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has approved the establishment of two groundbreaking Centres aimed at promoting sustainable development and gender equality. This decision came during the 301st meeting of the University Senate held at the University Auditorium.
The new Centres include the Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy and the Centre for Gender Studies. The meeting, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, was marked by the unanimous endorsement of these initiatives following recommendations presented by Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho, Chairman of the Business Committee of the Senate (BCOS) and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic).
Prof. Egbewole highlighted UNILORIN’s proactive approach in engaging with global leaders, citing the University’s early interactions with Gunter Pauli, a prominent advocate of the blue economy. This engagement positions UNILORIN to leverage international support for the Centre’s success.
Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy
The new Centre aims to champion the sustainable use of oceans and freshwater resources while addressing environmental challenges. It will focus on harnessing the potential of the Blue Economy—a concept that emphasizes ecological sustainability and innovation. The Centre will be overseen by a Board appointed by the Vice Chancellor and managed by a Director with support from deputy directors.
Centre for Gender Studies
The Centre for Gender Studies is designed to critically examine and challenge traditional gender norms and biases. It aims to promote gender-sensitive curricula and inclusive practices to combat gender-based discrimination and advance global gender equality agendas, such as those outlined in the Beijing Declaration. The Centre will also support the development of gender-focused academic programmes, including postgraduate diplomas, Master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in Gender and Development.
The Senate’s decision reflects UNILORIN’s commitment to addressing global and societal issues through innovative academic and research initiatives.
