The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has officially inaugurated its new Ikorodu Model Study Centre in Lagos State, marking a significant milestone in expanding access to education. The ceremony, held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, was attended by key figures including Malam Isah Yuguda, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the NOUN Governing Council, and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olufemi Peters.

In his address, Malam Isah Yuguda emphasized NOUN’s commitment to making education accessible throughout Nigeria. He highlighted the university’s network of over 123 study centres across the country, designed to ensure that quality education reaches every corner, from bustling cities to remote areas. “This concept ensures that no matter where you are, whether in the bustling cities or the remote areas of our vast nation, you have access to quality education without constraint of time and space,” Yuguda stated.

Yuguda praised the Ikorodu Model Study Centre for its potential to become a central hub for knowledge sharing, student registration, and community workshops. He also envisioned the centre playing a pivotal role in delivering tech-driven learning solutions, positioning the Ikorodu community to benefit from the growing digital economy. He extended his appreciation to Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Federal Ministry of Education for their support in funding the project, as well as to the Ikorodu Monarch for his leadership and support.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Olufemi Peters reflected on the origins of the study centre’s establishment. He noted that the decision to locate the centre in Ikorodu was part of a strategic move to alleviate overcrowding at the university’s Lagos office and to avoid reliance on rented properties. Peters acknowledged TETFund and the Needs Assessment Grant from the Federal Ministry of Education for their contributions to the centre’s funding, and expressed gratitude to TETFund Executive Secretary Arc. Sonny Echono for his ongoing support.

The event was also attended by former NOUN Vice-Chancellors Prof. Vincent Tenebe and Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu, who commended the current management for its efforts in expanding the university’s infrastructure and bringing education closer to students. Oba Adewale Kabir, the local monarch, praised NOUN’s impact on the community and pledged to advocate for the university.

The inauguration concluded with a tour of the new facility, attended by NOUN Principal Officers, centre directors, the Ikorodu Monarch, media representatives, centre staff, and invited guests. The new Ikorodu Model Study Centre is poised to enhance educational access and opportunities for the region and beyond.
