UNIMAID and Women Medical Doctors Association Forge Strategic Partnership for Healthcare and Education
The Women Medical Doctors Association of Nigeria (WMDAN), Borno State Chapel, has initiated a strategic collaboration with the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to enhance medical training and healthcare delivery, with a specific focus on female practitioners and maternal health.
The partnership was solidified on Monday, February 9, 2026, during a courtesy visit by the association to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, at the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building.
Professor Mele highlighted the critical need to increase the number of female medical professionals in the region. He proposed a visionary approach to recruitment, suggesting that the university and WMDAN identify female medical talents as early as secondary school.
“Our focus should be on identifying passion and interest rather than financial motivation,” the Vice-Chancellor stated, emphasizing the university's commitment to supporting high-potential students from less privileged backgrounds who lack the resources to pursue medical degrees.
The leadership of both institutions identified several immediate touchpoints for the partnership:
Campus Health Education: WMDAN will play a vital role in educating female students on health and hygiene within the university hostels.
Regional Health Impact: Dr. Rukaiya Buba Iman, leader of the WMDAN delegation, noted that the association is particularly interested in collaborative research and intervention in maternal and child health across the North-East.
Institutional Mentorship: Strengthening the relationship between established female doctors and medical students to foster professional growth.
Dr. Iman thanked the university management for their warm reception, noting that the visit was essential for familiarizing the association with the university’s new leadership. Professor Mele reaffirmed that the university is ready to provide the necessary institutional support to ensure these initiatives bridge critical gaps in the region's healthcare system.
