The University of Maiduguri has announced the suspension of the foreign component of the TETFund Scholarship for Academic Staff (TSAS), following a directive from TETFund citing high costs and scholar abscondment.
The University of Maiduguri has announced the suspension of the foreign component of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Scholarship for Academic Staff (TSAS). The announcement follows a directive from TETFund conveyed in a circular dated November 25, 2024.
In a statement signed by the Registrar, Ahmad A. Lawan, and dated November 29, 2024, the decision was attributed to the excessive cost of training academic staff in foreign institutions and the increasing rate of scholar abscondment.
The University, however, assured that the local component of the scholarship scheme will continue to run without interruption. Academic staff who have applied for the foreign scholarship component have been encouraged to explore alternative funding opportunities.
The policy will take effect from January 1, 2025. Staff members who are already enrolled in foreign institutions under the TETFund scholarship will continue to receive sponsorship until the conclusion of their respective programs.
This development highlights TETFund’s efforts to optimize its funding strategy and address challenges in managing international training programs. The University of Maiduguri has communicated the decision to key stakeholders, including the Vice-Chancellor, bursar, deans, and heads of departments, to ensure a seamless transition.
For affected academic staff, this suspension emphasizes the importance of leveraging local scholarship opportunities and alternative funding sources to support their academic advancement.
