In a groundbreaking partnership aimed at revolutionizing education in Igbo communities, the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has joined forces with the Odinala Cultural Heritage Foundation (OCHIE Igbo) to promote the teaching of science curriculum in the Igbo language.

According to Caleb Onwe, the National Publicity Secretary of OCHIE Igbo, this collaboration marks a significant step towards addressing educational barriers faced by Igbo children in primary and secondary schools. By utilizing the mother tongue as a medium of instruction, the initiative aims to enhance learning outcomes and foster innovation among Igbo youths.

Scheduled for March 15, the unveiling of the OCHIE-Igbo STEM Project Committees at UNIZIK signifies the commitment of both institutions to this innovative approach to education. The proposed establishment of the OCHIE Igbo STEM School, dubbed the "Igbo Silicone Valley," is set to provide a virtual platform for Igbo children worldwide to access STEM education in their native language.

"The efficacy of teaching in one's mother tongue has long been recognized by educationists and researchers. Through this project, we aspire to empower a generation of Igbo children capable of excelling in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics," stated Onwe.

The initiative will be led by three key committees: the Coordination Committee, headed by Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu and Okoro Chinedum Benedict; the Curriculum Development Committee, led by Prof. Lilian Akudolu; and the Igbo Translation Committee, led by Prof. Thecla Udemmadu.

With the inauguration of these committees, UNIZIK and OCHIE Igbo are poised to spearhead a transformative shift in educational paradigms, paving the way for a future where science education thrives in the Igbo language.
