The governing council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has declared a state of emergency on infrastructure at the institution’s College of Health Sciences following concerns over existing facilities at its campuses in Nnewi and Neni.
The decision was reached after a two-day council meeting and inspection tour of the college’s facilities, during which the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, granted immediate approval for accelerated infrastructural development across the college.
The declaration was made while the Pro-Chancellor, alongside council members and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie, attended the second induction and oath-taking ceremony of the Department of Anatomy. The council subsequently undertook an assessment of ongoing construction works and available facilities at the Okofia and Akamili campuses in Nnewi, as well as the Neni campus.
As part of the intervention, the university activated the College Board, which was inaugurated in 2022, and initiated plans aimed at revitalising and upgrading infrastructure within a six-month timeline. The development plan is expected to focus on improving facilities and providing modern infrastructure to support academic and professional training in the health sciences.
The council members and the Vice-Chancellor were received by the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Jude-Kennedy Emejulu. Internal council members present during the visit included Professor Pius Okoye, Professor Kenneth Oraegbunam, Professor Igwebuike Onyiorah, and Professor Tracie Utoh-Ezeajughi, who represented the Senate. Also in attendance were Dr Ndubisi Nwobu, Professor Paul Okolie, and Engineer Iyke Onwuemene, representing the Congregation and Convocation respectively.
