Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) witnessed a groundbreaking event as the 44th Senate President, Akinniyi Akinwande, orchestrated the inaugural Mock Assembly organized by the Senate arm of the Student Union Government (SUG). The assembly, themed “Bridging the Gap Between the Students and the Senate,” took place on April 30, 2024, at the CE10 Engineering Building, marking the commencement of the new Senate council's activities.

Distinguished figures from the YABATECH community graced the event, including Senator Peter Sunday, the first and 42nd Senate President post-reinstatement; Comrade Morakinyo Olaolu Sola, the 44th SUG President; Comrade Ojikutu Nofisat, the 44th General Secretary; and representatives from the Nigerian Youth Parliament and Lagos State Parliament.

Senate President Akinniyi Akinwande stressed the significance of the Mock Assembly in educating students and Senate members on parliamentary procedures. In an interview with the PIJAlance Campus Information Desk (CID) Team, he emphasized the event's role in enhancing student welfare and facilitating informed decision-making. Akinwande underscored the Senate's responsibility in effectively communicating student concerns to the college management.

SUG President Morakinyo Olaolu Sola highlighted the tradition of organizing a Mock Assembly at the beginning of each new administration, emphasizing its role in orienting new members to Senate operations.

General Secretary Comrade Ojibutu Nofisat discussed the assembly's broader impact, particularly in addressing issues like sexual harassment on campus. She urged students to speak up against intimidation and harassment, stressing the importance of creating platforms to tackle such challenges.

Emeritus Senate President Peter Sunday emphasized the Mock Assembly's role in clarifying student leaders' responsibilities and encouraging accountability. He urged students to actively engage in the governance process and hold their leaders accountable.

Representative Honorable Daniel Agbaje from the Lagos Mainland Constituency highlighted the importance of legislative knowledge for students, noting its relevance in creating effective campus policies.

The Mock Assembly exemplified the robust student participation in governance and emphasized the need for transparent and accountable leadership. It sets the stage for a new era of active student engagement in YABATECH's legislative processes.
