24 Schools Set to Compete in Mercy Bassey Annual Science Quiz Competition
The quiz will cover subjects including Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and General Knowledge. Additionally, this year's competition will introduce a debate segment for arts students, focusing on the topic "Mainstreaming Agriculture in the ARISE Agenda for Food Security."

In a bid to promote academic excellence, critical thinking, and effective communication among students, 24 schools in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State are set to compete in the fourth edition of the Hon. (Lady) Mercy Bassey Annual Science Quiz Competition. The competition will commence on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.
Lady Mercy Bassey, Transition Committee Chairman of the area, highlighted the event as part of her commitment to securing the future of the community's youth. Speaking at a press conference at the Mkpat Enin Council Secretariat, Bassey emphasized the importance of the competition in helping students develop intensive and critical thinking skills.

The quiz will cover subjects including Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and General Knowledge. Additionally, this year's competition will introduce a debate segment for arts students, focusing on the topic "Mainstreaming Agriculture in the ARISE Agenda for Food Security."
"The objective of this competition is to foster a culture of academic excellence, critical thinking, and effective communication among students. We aim to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders and innovators," Bassey stated.
She also announced that cash prizes will be awarded for the first time to further motivate students and teachers. The event will include various activities such as health clinics, capacity-building sessions, business promotions, and a thanksgiving event. Awards and recognitions will be given to distinguished members, former lecturers, and deceased colleagues.

The competition timeline began in March 2024 and will conclude in August 2024 with a grand finale and the inauguration of a new executive team for the alumni association.
The state chairman of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Mr. Michael Effiong, praised Lady Bassey's initiative, noting her dedication to education as a professional teacher. He commended the competition for providing a platform outside the classroom for students to explore knowledge.
