A New Era Begins in UNIZIK as Joseph Ikechebelu Assumes Role of Acting Vice-Chancellor

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) witnessed a momentous transition as Professor Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikechebelu officially took on the mantle of Acting Vice-Chancellor in a ceremony marked by gratitude and a profound sense of duty. Franklin Onwubiko reports.
In his inaugural address, Professor Ikechebelu expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Chancellor, council members, and predecessors for the trust bestowed upon him. He also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's supportive stance towards the needs of federal universities, underscoring a commitment to advancing UNIZIK's mission.
Reflecting on the legacy of outgoing Vice-Chancellor Professor Esimone, Ikechebelu lauded his leadership and the strides achieved under the Project200 initiative. Drawing from his extensive experience, including roles as Head of Department, Dean, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), he affirmed readiness for the challenges ahead.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor outlined his vision encapsulated in the "BLEDS" targets: Beautify, Light-up, Excellent, Digitize, and Secure UNIZIK. These initiatives aim to elevate infrastructure, academic standards, and overall campus ambiance.

Emphasizing a leadership ethos inspired by biblical figures, Ikechebelu invoked the empathy of David and the wisdom of Solomon, calling for unity and collaboration among the university community. The appointment of Professor Ikechebelu follows the conclusion of Professor Esimone's tenure on June 3, 2024. The decision was formally ratified at a special Senate meeting held at the University Auditorium on the same day, in line with the NUC's directive to ensure continuity pending the inauguration of a Governing Council.
As UNIZIK embarks on this new chapter under Professor Ikechebelu's stewardship, anticipation runs high for the realization of his vision and the university's continued growth and excellence.
