ABSU Elevates Optometry Department to Full Faculty Status

Abia State University has elevated its Department of Optometry to a full-fledged Faculty, alongside Nursing Sciences and Medical Laboratory Science. This makes ABSU's Faculty of Optometry the first of its kind in Nigeria and Africa. Under Vice-Chancellor Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu's leadership, ABSU aims to set global standards in optometry education, supported by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Oti. Abia State University (ABSU) has reached a significant milestone in its academic landscape with the elevation of the Department of Optometry, alongside Nursing Sciences and Medical Laboratory Science, to full-fledged faculties. This transformative move, approved by the University Senate, establishes ABSU’s Faculty of Optometry as the first of its kind in Nigeria and Africa.

Under the visionary leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu, ABSU has received acclaim for advancing its academic offerings. The newly established Faculty of Optometry comprises six departments including Ocular Health, Low Vision and Rehabilitation, Primary Care Optometry, Cornea and Contact Lens, Pediatric Optometry, and Orthoptics and Vision Therapy.

Professor Chris Timothy, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, commended the Vice-Chancellor for his steadfast commitment to enhancing ABSU’s academic stature.
