Benue State University Lecturer Defends Actions After Alleged Assault on Student in Viral Video
Professor Tersagh Ichor defends his strict disciplinary methods after allegedly assaulting students at Benue State University.
In a shocking incident at Benue State University (BSU) Makurdi, Professor Tersagh Ichor, a visiting professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, has defended his controversial actions after allegedly knocking, slapping, and kicking students out of his lecture hall. Professor Ichor, who holds a permanent position at Joseph Saawuan Tarka University Makurdi, has provided a detailed defense in response to the accusations.
In a series of messages, Professor Ichor expressed his frustration with what he described as unprecedented student behavior at BSU. He stated, "I am teaching at five universities, including two abroad. I have never encountered what I am seeing at BSU, where aimless students behave so disruptively and threaten to kill their teachers."

Professor Ichor elaborated on his strict classroom management policies, emphasizing the importance of discipline and respect for academic freedom. He outlined his expectations for students, which include not entering the class without permission once the lecture has begun, not using the classroom as a walkway, and adhering to acceptable standards of behavior and appearance.
"A teacher takes control of his class for effective knowledge transmission," Professor Ichor wrote. "No student should enter a class when the teacher is inside without permission. The class is not a route for students to move in and walk through to another point. This distracts both the students and the teacher. Academic freedom in the university must not be abused with unwholesome indiscipline from people who the university will certify in character and learning."

He continued, "When indiscipline is condoned, the backlash has far-reaching negative consequences. The poster should investigate properly before embarking on this mischievous voyage by engaging the principal actors and the circumstances thereof. A teacher should remodel the character of students to be fit in character and learning for the award of the degree being sought."

Addressing his specific actions, Professor Ichor stated, "They are over a thousand in BSU alone. I knock those with wrong hairstyles when they come to see me until they shave to acceptable standards. None enters my class when late except for a genuine reason. The class is not a walkway. You must take permission while I am in class for any reason at all. Academic freedom must respect the rights of others. I stand by my actions anywhere."
The incident has sparked a heated debate on campus, with students and faculty divided on the professor's methods. While some support his stance on discipline and classroom management, others believe his actions were excessive and unprofessional.
As investigations continue, the university administration has yet to release an official statement regarding the matter. Meanwhile, Professor Ichor's robust defense provides a glimpse into the challenges and frustrations faced by educators in maintaining discipline and ensuring effective learning environments.
