The University of Lagos (UNILAG) officially launched its 2024 International Week and 17th Annual Research Conference on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, with a grand opening ceremony at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall, Akoka. Themed "Inclusive Digital Transformation and the University Promise," the event brought together major stakeholders in education, government, and international organizations to discuss the critical role of digital technology in expanding visibility, inclusion, and the impact of tertiary education.
In her opening address, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, emphasized the university’s commitment to fostering global partnerships, enhancing international visibility, and driving knowledge exchange through its annual conferences. She highlighted how these collaborations have strengthened academic programs, upscaled curriculum content, and improved staff development.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed pride in UNILAG’s recent ranking as the second-best university in Nigeria by Times Higher Education, reaffirming the institution’s leadership in academic and digital innovation. She praised the event as a platform for fostering international collaboration, reviewing past achievements, and exploring new opportunities for inclusive digital transformation.
Representing Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Dr. Chris Maiyaki, commended UNILAG for its achievements in global outreach and digital transformation. He advocated for greater access to technology, flexible learning, and curriculum integration as essential strategies to advance digital inclusion in tertiary education.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, hailed UNILAG's commitment to digital inclusion, calling it a model for other institutions to follow. He encouraged increased collaboration among stakeholders to drive digital transformation and enhance the overall quality of higher education.
The event featured panel sessions, with education leaders discussing the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation. Speakers included top officials from NUC, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and other universities, as well as representatives from international organizations like the European Union Commission and Elsevier.
The ceremony also showcased innovative solutions from university teams across Nigeria as part of the Energy Innovation Challenge, underlining UNILAG’s commitment to advancing STEM education and research.
