The Vice-Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Kate Azuka Omenugha, has declared that the institution is targeting a place among Nigeria’s top 10 public universities and the top 1,000 universities globally before the end of her tenure.

She made the declaration on April 21, 2026, during a press conference held ahead of the university’s 16th Convocation Week, describing the ambition as part of a broader institutional transformation agenda aimed at improving the university’s national and international standing.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the university had little or no visible presence on major global ranking platforms before her administration came on board, a development she said prompted urgent reforms across key operational and academic sectors.

She explained that her administration has since embarked on structured reforms designed to strengthen the institution’s performance in critical ranking indicators, including teaching quality, research output, institutional reputation, infrastructure development, and global visibility.

“I want, before I leave office, for COOU to be ranked among the top 10 public universities in Nigeria and among the first 1,000 in the world,” she stated.

Kate Azuka Omenugha expressed confidence that the target is achievable if the university sustains its current pace of reforms and institutional development.

She attributed the university’s growing recognition to the commitment of staff, students, and stakeholders who have aligned with the administration’s reform-driven agenda.

The Vice-Chancellor further noted that the ranking ambition is tied to her administration’s “3Vs” policy framework — Values, Viability, and Visibility — which she described as the foundation for repositioning the institution into a globally competitive university.

University officials say recent reforms have focused on digital transformation, academic restructuring, research development, and institutional branding as part of efforts to increase the institution’s competitiveness within Nigeria’s higher education sector and beyond.
