Develop Early Research Skills, Dr. Adjekuko Charges Undergraduates

Students in higher institutions have been charged to develop early research skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving skills in order to excel in research projects.

The Head of Radiography and Radiation Science Department, University of Delta,Agbor, Dr. Collins Adjekuko gave the charge during a Career Conversations Series held at the Institution.

Dr. Adjekuko who spoke on the theme, "Advancing Health Frontiers: Career Opportunities Across Basic Medical Sciences", said there was need for undergraduates in institutions of higher learning to have a sound foundational research skills and also seek mentorship as experience was often the best teacher. He posited that mentors often shared their own experiences on how they were able to navigate the terrain.

He encouraged them to explore internship opportunities for hands-on-training, and practical skill acquisition, as these would help them understand workplace dynamics and professional environment.While discussing the topic, he pointed out that the challenging indices in Nigeria healthcare calls for concerted efforts and innovations aimed at improving health and healthcare systems.

He maintained that health initiatives, technologies and strategies must be designed to advance health frontiers and improve the health system.He also stated that to advance health frontiers, Nigeria must adopt a multi- facetted approach by strengthening primary healthcare system, leveraging on new technologies, boosting research capacities, implementing health policy reforms and improving health workforce.Continuing, Dr. Adjekuko enumerated the career opportunities in Basic Medical Sciences as well as challenges in choosing careers.

Dr. Faith Iniabasi Imafidon in her address on behalf of the Directorate for Career Development and Counseling, noted that the programme was deliberately designed for students from one hundred to three hundred levels to broaden their understanding of available career options and opportunities within their chosen field of careers.

The Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Science, Prof. John Igweh thanked the University Management for organizing the program and tasked the students to take the lecture serious for academic growth and advancement.
