Federal Government Pledges to Implement Education Sector Roadmap

The Federal Government has reassured stakeholders in the education sector of its commitment to faithfully implement the sector roadmap being developed to achieve the desired transformation and turnaround of education in Nigeria. This assurance was given at a two-day retreat held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital.

The retreat, aimed at brainstorming on strategies for implementing the Ministerial Roadmap for the Education Sector 2024-2027 and the adoption of the draft monitoring and evaluation plan and framework for its implementation, was attended by directors in the Federal Ministry of Education, Chief Executives of Education parastatals, Commissioners of Education across the states of the Federation, and other critical stakeholders.

The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, and the Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the double-digit 2024 budget proposal for the education sector, describing the development as a significant improvement over the last couple of years.

They noted that this has underscored the premium President Tinubu attaches to the education sector and promised to justify the confidence reposed in them by the President through the faithful implementation of the education roadmap and the renewed hope agenda of the President.

Professor Mamman acknowledged the efforts of previous administrations in the development of the education sector but insisted that a lot still has to be done in areas of infrastructural development, teacher quality, the security of our institutions, as well as access to quality education, especially for the vulnerable groups.

He charged heads of parastatals and agencies to work assiduously and collectively to enhance the quality of education delivery at all levels for the benefit of the country and appealed to all state governors to work in partnership with the federal government to achieve a vibrant, functional, and self-sustaining education sector for the country.

Dr Sununu commended the dogged efforts of his colleague, the Minister, the Permanent Secretary, and other stakeholders, whom he said have worked strenuously for the development, criticism, and compilation of the 2024–2027 Roadmap for the education sector. He described the retreat as an essential mechanism to drive the timely and effective implementation of the master plan and called for the buy-in of stakeholders, particularly the states of the Federation, to ensure the effective implementation of the roadmap.

Participants at the retreat agreed on the need to set clear objectives, assign responsibilities, and establish timelines for achieving set goals.
