Fire Devastates Anambra Secondary Schools in Nawfia
Two secondary schools in Nawfia, Anambra State, were ravaged by fire originating from nearby bush, prompting urgent calls for improved fire safety measures in school premises.
Anambra State witnessed a tragic incident as two secondary schools in Nawfia, situated within the Njikoka local government area, were engulfed by fire. The affected institutions, Community Secondary School and Comprehensive Secondary School, fell victim to the blaze which reportedly originated from a nearby bush.
According to reports, the fire broke out in the evening and rapidly spread to the school buildings, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Martin Agbili, the State Fire Chief, disclosed that the distress call was received at approximately 6:49 pm on Saturday, 27th January 2024. Upon receiving the alert, the Anambra State Fire Service promptly dispatched firefighters and a fire truck to the scene.

Agbili explained, "The heavy fire outbreak emanated from nearby bush and spread to the school buildings. We arrived and battled the fire with the assistance of some individuals who were there before our arrival." He further highlighted a similar incident that occurred the day before at Comprehensive Secondary School, Nawfia, also attributed to bush fires encroaching upon school premises.

The fire chief issued a cautionary statement in light of the ongoing harmattan season, urging school authorities to take proactive measures such as clearing bushes in close proximity to school compounds.
