FULAFIA Professor Highlights Risks of Poor Radiation in Breast Cancer Treatment

A professor of radiography and radiological sciences at the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Dlama Joseph Zira, has emphasized the risks associated with poor radiation management in breast cancer treatment, warning that over 2.3 million women diagnosed annually are at risk.

Delivering the 36th Inaugural Lecture at FULafia, Prof. Zira stressed the need for optimized radiation doses and improved image quality through the adoption of Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs). He highlighted the importance of localizing DRLs to reflect Nigeria's clinical realities, rather than relying on foreign benchmarks.

The lecture, titled "Breast Cancer Imaging and Radiation Safety: Redefining Safer Care through Diagnostic Reference Levels for Healthcare Transformation," brought together academics, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders to discuss the importance of safety protocols, quality assurance, and ethical practice in medical imaging.
