The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Alumni Association, Abeokuta Branch, on December 10, 2025, hosted its annual career guidance programme aimed at inspiring and preparing secondary school students for emerging opportunities in a rapidly evolving world.
The event, themed “21st Century Career Pathway: Sojourn in the Light Shining from the Right Mind,” brought together students and teachers from several secondary schools across Abeokuta.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olusegun Idowu, commended the organisers for bridging the gap between academic learning and the practical demands of the workplace. He emphasised that academic excellence alone was no longer sufficient for success in a fast-changing, technology-driven global environment.
Prof. Idowu urged the students to cultivate adaptability, emotional intelligence, technological skills, and a commitment to lifelong learning. He encouraged them to embrace innovation, develop practical competencies, and build the confidence needed to become problem-solvers within their communities and beyond. He also appreciated the teachers and facilitators for their dedication to guiding the next generation, expressing confidence that the students would return to their schools more informed and motivated about their career prospects.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of the FUNAAB Alumni Association, Abeokuta Branch, Mr. Rasheed Ajibade, Mr. Oronto Olamide expressed delight at the participation of both students and teachers, describing them as the next generation of leaders, innovators and nation builders. He noted that the programme’s theme was timely, stressing that success in today’s world requires not only technological competence but also clarity of purpose and strength of character.
The Guest Speaker, Dr. Ibrahim Abdulganiyu, Provost, Federal Cooperative College, Ibadan who was represented by Dr. Iyiola Gbolahan, highlighted the importance of adaptability, technology, and innovation in shaping the future of young Nigerians. He encouraged the students to take the training seriously, describing the initiative as a significant investment in their future. He applauded the efforts of the Alumni Association in providing early guidance that helps young people navigate life after school.
In his remarks, the Global President of the FUNAAB Alumni Association, Mr. Bolaji Gbadamosi, advised the students to remain focused on their academics and consider agriculture as a viable and promising career path in the 21st century. He noted that early guidance shaped his own academic journey and contributed to his success in the agricultural profession.
Also, Mrs. Oluwakemi Fashina of the Lakem Support Foundation, alongside the Alumni Secretary, Mr. Femi Ajayi, spoke on appropriate subject combinations for WAEC and UTME examinations. They guided the students on selecting subjects that align with their strengths and career aspirations, ensuring they meet the requirements for their desired university programmes.
The event was well attended by members of the FUNAAB Alumni Association, teachers, and students from various secondary schools within Abeokuta.
