The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) Zoo Park has announced major expansions to its wildlife collection, including a state-of-the-art elephant enclosure and the arrival of three new exotic species, signalling a new phase in the University’s commitment to conservation, research, and experiential learning.
The new acquisitions include a breeding pair of Giant Desert Tortoises, a male and female Peafowl, and a male Civet cat. According to Zoo Park Director, Olufemi Sammy Sam-Wobo, all animals underwent thorough veterinary checks and are in excellent health. The additions aim to diversify the Zoo’s collection, enhance visitor experience, and increase educational and research opportunities.
Prof. Sam-Wobo noted that visitor feedback influenced the decision to acquire these species, ensuring that tourists have exposure to animals rarely seen in Nigeria, such as the Giant Desert Tortoise. He also acknowledged support from the Vice-Chancellor, Babatunde Kehinde, the University Community, and vendors who provided the animals at reduced costs.
On the elephant enclosure, Prof. Sam-Wobo confirmed that it is fully completed and ready to receive the new resident, which is expected to become the Zoo’s flagship attraction. While an exact arrival date has not been confirmed due to logistical arrangements, preparations are complete, and the Zoo anticipates the elephant will arrive soon.
The Director emphasized that these initiatives reflect FUNAAB’s broader strategy to strengthen biodiversity, conservation education, and eco-tourism. “Visitors should expect growth, improved biodiversity, and a stronger conservation footprint,” he said. The Zoo’s expansion positions it as a leading destination for unique and diverse species in South-West Nigeria, offering enhanced opportunities for research, recreation, and environmental education.
