FUTA Alumni Secure Coveted Spots in Prestigious Green and Sustainable Chemistry Summer School in the USA

Two alumni from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Ifeoluwa Oyekunle and Oluwaseunnla Adelusi, have been selected for the highly competitive 2024 American Chemical Society GCI Green & Sustainable Chemistry Summer School at the University of Vermont.

Two distinguished alumni from the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Ifeoluwa Oyekunle and Oluwaseunnla Adelusi, have been selected to participate in the 2024 American Chemical Society GCI Green & Sustainable Chemistry Summer School. This prestigious and highly selective week-long program, held at the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont, gathers approximately 60 outstanding students from North, Central, and South America, and the Caribbean.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) Green and Sustainable Chemistry Summer School (GSCSS) is renowned for its rigorous selection process, offering a fully-funded, exceptional learning experience for graduate students and postdoctoral chemists and engineers. David A. Laviska, Portfolio Manager for Green Chemistry and Sustainability in Education at the ACS Green Chemistry Institute, highlighted the significance of this opportunity, stating, "ACS has offered this fully-funded, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to exceptional graduate students and postdoctoral chemists and engineers for over two decades."

Ifeoluwa Oyekunle holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from FUTA (2018) and a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering and Technology from the University of Leeds, UK. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Materials Chemistry at Florida State University. Ifeoluwa is a recipient of the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, multiple fully-funded PhD assistantships, and several other national and international awards.

Oluwaseunnla Adelusi earned a Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical & Materials Engineering from FUTA (2018), where she also served as the president of the University Debate Club. She holds two prestigious Erasmus Scholarships and a Joint Master’s Degree in Tribology of Surfaces and Interfaces from the University of Leeds-UK, University of Ljubljana-Slovenia, and Luleå University of Technology-Sweden. Currently, she is conducting her doctoral research at the University of Sherbrooke and is the recipient of the prestigious Canadian Vanier scholarship. Her accolades include winning the 2023 Three Minute Thesis Competition at the University of Sherbrooke, the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Grant, and the Jeanie McCoy STLE award.

Both Ifeoluwa and Oluwaseunnla have demonstrated exceptional academic and leadership qualities throughout their careers, earning recognition and awards both nationally and internationally. Their selection for the ACS GSCSS underscores the global competitiveness and excellence of FUTA alumni.
