FUTMinna Pledges Continued Support for Researchers
Federal University of Technology Minna pledges ongoing support for research, emphasizing commercialization and community impact.
The Federal University of Technology (FUTMinna) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting its researchers in producing cutting-edge findings that positively impact the community. This assurance was given by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, during the opening of the Technology Transfer and Commercialisation Workshop, organized by the Africa Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and Food Safety in collaboration with the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office at the Minna main campus, Gidan Kwano.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academics, Engr. Professor Abdullahi Mohammed, Prof. Kuta emphasized the university’s dedication to fostering research that extends beyond academic publications to practical applications and commercialization. He highlighted the annual interaction with top researchers and the institution of awards to motivate and recognize their contributions to research and development.

“FUT Minna is dedicated to ensuring that research outcomes have a direct community impact. Therefore, we encourage our researchers to not only present their findings at conferences or publish in journals but also to register and commercialize their research. This enables the university to claim ownership and royalties,” stated Prof. Kuta.

The Vice Chancellor noted that FUT Minna is currently the second-highest recipient of TETFUND research grants among Nigerian universities and is poised to become the leading institution in grant acquisition, thanks to its dedicated researchers.
Prof. Jimoh Oladejo Tijani, Coordinator of the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office, explained that the workshop aligns with the World Intellectual Property Organization’s goals, showcasing viable products developed by the university’s staff, students, and researchers. He reported an increase in patented products from seven last year to thirteen this year, with four more under review by the Patent Registry in Abuja.

Prof. Hadiza Lami Mohammed, Deputy Centre Leader of the Africa Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and Food Safety, highlighted the center’s success in bringing products to market, such as teaching aids, and stressed that more patented products would soon follow.
Additionally, Mohammed Dikko Mohammed, Project Officer at the Bank of Industries (BOI) Niger State office, expressed the bank’s readiness to partner with individuals and groups supporting its industrialization mandate.
