Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, has called on universities to place greater emphasis on quality research as a pathway to global recognition, during a high-level workshop on university rankings facilitated by Times Higher Education (THE).
The session was led by Mr. Victor Okeugo, Regional Manager (Sub-Saharan Africa) for THE, and brought together Principal Officers, Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments to discuss strategies for elevating institutional performance in global rankings.
Mr. Okeugo urged academics to engage in meaningful research that advances knowledge while enhancing institutional visibility and reputation. He highlighted the importance of research that responds to community needs, noting that such initiatives attract grants, partnerships, and stronger ranking outcomes. He emphasized that universities should develop programmes that benefit their immediate communities, embrace innovation, and leverage digital learning, while also fostering cross-continental collaborations to remain competitive on the global stage.
He further warned against the misuse of ranking processes for personal gain, noting that such practices undermine the credibility and integrity of institutions. “Universities must be innovative and progressive in creating programmes to attract collaborations and meaningful partnerships,” he said.
Responding on behalf of the university, Professor Sergius Udeh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), stated that the workshop was organized to strengthen the research capacity of staff. He reiterated the university’s commitment to empowering academic staff with the skills necessary for high-quality research, publications, and programme development that meet international standards. Professor Udeh encouraged teaching staff and department heads to pursue projects capable of attracting global partnerships and further enhancing the university’s ranking profile.
Participants described the workshop as highly enlightening and invaluable for advancing both their research capabilities and the growth of Godfrey Okoye University. Established in 2009, the university comprises seven faculties, a College of Medicine, a School of Nursing, a Teaching Hospital, and a vibrant School of Postgraduate Studies. The institution is currently ranked the best private university in Nigeria’s South-East and South-South regions, and fourth among all private universities in the country.
