Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL) has taken a significant step towards expanding its academic offerings by inaugurating a committee tasked with establishing a Faculty of Environmental Management Sciences. The ceremony, held in the University Management Meeting Room, underscores IBBUL's commitment to addressing global environmental challenges through education and research.

During the inauguration, Vice Chancellor Professor Abu Kasim Adamu highlighted the crucial role of environmental education in today's context. He emphasized that the establishment of the Faculty is a testament to the university's dedication to producing graduates proficient in environmental issues and capable of offering innovative solutions to pressing global challenges.

"The new Faculty will focus on a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating principles from various fields such as ecology, environmental policy, sustainable development, and natural resource management," Professor Adamu stated. He also charged the committee with developing and implementing academic programs that will equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to manage and protect the environment.

Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of collaboration with local, national, and international partners to enhance research and practical training opportunities for students. This initiative aims to create a learning environment that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for effective environmental stewardship.

In his remarks, Professor Mustapha Zabairu, Chairman of the Committee, expressed the timeliness of establishing the Faculty, given the urgent need for environmental protection. He pointed out that while developing countries like Nigeria are not the primary contributors to global warming, they bear the brunt of its effects, such as flooding and droughts.

Professor Zubairu noted that global efforts to mitigate these challenges have led to the creation of funding bodies, allocating over $100 billion to support initiatives aimed at addressing environmental degradation. He stressed the importance of positioning IBBUL as a leader in environmental research and advocacy to tap into these opportunities.

He also mentioned potential international funding sources, such as the International Renewable Energy Agency in Abu Dhabi and the International Energy Agency in Paris, which could significantly support the Faculty's projects.

The committee is expected to submit a detailed report to the Vice Chancellor within four weeks. Its terms of reference include developing a comprehensive curriculum, recommending suitable personnel, and advising on infrastructure and resource requirements for the new Faculty.

In closing, Alhaji Idris Saleh Kusherki, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, congratulated the committee members and urged them to work collaboratively to achieve their goals. He expressed confidence that the Faculty of Environmental Management Sciences would become a hub for innovation, generating practical solutions to environmental challenges faced both locally and globally.

The committee includes Professor Ahmed Doko from the Department of Quantity Surveying at ABU, Zaria, Dr. Mohammed Isa Bala from the Department of Architecture at FUT, Minna, and other notable members from government and academic institutions. The inauguration event concluded with a tour of the proposed site for the Faculty and other significant locations within the campus.
