On Monday, May 20, 2024, a team from Imperial College London, led by Ms. Catherine Troman, visited the management of the Hospital under the guidance of the Chief Medical Director. The purpose of their visit was to discuss the collaboration on the Typhoid Environmental Surveillance Study (TESS) project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Ms. Catherine Troman highlighted the significance of the project, emphasizing its focus on training UCH staff on Nanopore sequencing. This molecular tool is crucial for diagnosing infectious diseases, particularly Salmonella Typhi, the causative agent of Typhoid Fever.

The Country's Principal Investigator, Prof. Aderemi Kehinde, explained that the TESS project aims to enhance researchers' capacity in genomic epidemiology of infectious diseases and improve laboratory diagnostic capabilities at UCH. The training session is set to span five days, providing valuable insights and skills to the hospital staff.
