"Invisible Drivers of Knowledge": FULafia Librarian Advocates for Cataloguers’ Recognition

Prof. Abiodun Olaide Iyoro, the Librarian, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), has underscored the vital but often overlooked role of cataloguers in ensuring access to knowledge, calling for their proper recognition.

Iyoro spoke as he delivered the 41st Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), recently.

In his lecture, titled: “Moving Vehicle on a Difficult Terrain with an Invisible Driver Behind the Wheel: The Work Life of a Cataloguer,” Iyoro described cataloguers as the “invisible drivers” of library systems "whose works determine how easily information is accessed and used."

A professor of knowledge organisation, Iyoro explained key cataloguing processes reaffirming the relevance of global standards such as the Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classification systems. 

He highlighted the impact of ICT tools, including OPACs and MARC 21, on modern library operations.

The FULafia chief librarian unveiled a simplified Cutter Table he developed to improve organisation of library materials, calling for better welfare, training, and recognition for cataloguers.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, commended the lecture as a valuable contribution to scholarship and institutional development.
