Kano State Polytechnic Seeks Government Intervention on Long-Abandoned Projects
The Management of Kano State Polytechnic has appealed to the Kano State Ministry for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation, MPPMPE, to facilitate government intervention towards reviving several long-abandoned and deteriorating projects across the institution’s campuses.
The appeal was made during an engagement visit by officials of the Ministry, led by the Hon. Commissioner, Comrade Nura Iron Ma'aji Sumaila, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Abdulrazak Haruna. The visit was to assess some of the institution’s infrastructural needs and discuss possible areas of intervention.
Speaking on behalf of the Rector, Dr. Abubakar Umar Farouk, FCA, the Deputy Rector, Administration, Dr. Maryam Kabir, appreciated the Kano State Government for its continued support to the development of education in the state.

She, however, drew the attention of the delegation to a number of abandoned projects within the Polytechnic which have remained unattended for many years despite their importance to academic and administrative activities.
Dr. Maryam explained that some of the projects have been abandoned for over two decades, and stressed that their completion would significantly improve the learning environment and enhance the Polytechnic’s capacity to provide quality education and training.
She also emphasized the urgent need for the comprehensive renovation of the Polytechnic’s Central Administration complex, noting that some of its facilities have become outdated and require rehabilitation to meet contemporary standards.
Among the projects highlighted were abandoned administrative blocks at the Central Administration, an unfinished 500-seat lecture theatre at the School of Management Studies, repair and maintenance works at the School of Technology, students’ centres, and other critical infrastructure projects across the institution.
The Deputy Rector further disclosed that the Polytechnic has fulfilled its obligations on some joint projects with the Kano State Government, while the government component of such projects remains outstanding.
Also speaking, the Registrar of the Polytechnic, Alhaji Mukhtar Ibrahim Bello, Falakin Kano, said the institution has consistently captured some of the abandoned projects in its annual budget proposals in an effort to secure the necessary funding for their completion.
He called for closer collaboration between the Polytechnic and the Ministry for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner, particularly in drawing the attention of the state government to the urgent infrastructural needs of the institution.
The Registrar expressed confidence that the Ministry’s project monitoring and evaluation mandate would help facilitate appropriate government attention towards the completion and rehabilitation of the affected projects.
Responding, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Abdulrazak Haruna, commended the Management of Kano State Polytechnic for its proactive approach in identifying and presenting the institution’s infrastructural challenges.
He acknowledged the concerns raised and assured the Management of the Ministry’s readiness to support efforts aimed at bringing the identified issues to the attention of the appropriate authorities.
Engr. Haruna clarified that although the Ministry is not directly responsible for awarding projects, it has an important role to play in promoting accountability, monitoring project implementation and facilitating constructive engagement with relevant government agencies. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving public infrastructure and promoting educational development across Kano State.
The engagement provided an opportunity for both parties to discuss practical steps towards addressing the infrastructural challenges facing the Polytechnic, with a renewed commitment to strengthening collaboration and ensuring a more conducive environment for teaching, learning and administrative activities.
