Lagos State University Strengthens Mental Health Support with Inauguration of Advocates

Lagos State University (LASU) has taken a significant step in promoting mental health awareness and support within its community with the inauguration and training of Mental Health Advocates, comprising volunteer staff and students, held on November 4, 2025.

The programme aims to address growing mental health concerns among LASU community members, equipping advocates with knowledge and skills for positive mental health promotion.

The Counselling and Careers Unit organised the event in collaboration with Mental Space Foundation Africa.

Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello described the initiative as timely and significant, highlighting LASU's commitment to compassion, empathy, and holistic development.

Professor Olatunji-Bello (represented by Professor Adenike Boyo) emphasised breaking stigma, replacing silence with support, and ensuring no community member faces emotional distress alone.

Head of Counselling and Careers Unit, explained the initiative's focus on peer support for students struggling with mental health issues.

The initiative underscores LASU's proactive approach to mental health support and its leadership in fostering a caring academic environment.
