LASU Management Welcomes New JUPEB Students with Merit Mandate and Major Infrastructure Reveal
Lagos State University formally welcomed its new Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) students with a clear message: excellence is expected, and the institution is investing heavily to ensure they succeed.
During the orientation at the University's School of Basic and Advanced Studies (LASUSBAS), held at Topo, Badagry, on Monday, 26th January 2026, the university leadership balanced rigorous academic expectations with a showcase of significant campus developments and student-focused initiatives.
The Lagos State University School of Basic and Advanced Studies (LASUSBAS) is the university’s foundational academic arm, established to provide structured preparatory and advanced programmes that equip students for a seamless transition into full undergraduate studies. The School administers the JUPEB Foundation programme as a merit-driven pathway into 200 Level across approved courses, upholding LASU’s core values of discipline, character, and academic excellence.
At the orientation programme, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM, set a tone of high aspiration and accountability. "Progression into 200 Level or full undergraduate admission is not automatic" she stated firmly, emphasising that the JUPEB programme is a “competitive preparatory platform” where advancement is “strictly based on performance, conduct, and compliance. What you put into this programme will directly determine what you get out of it", she concluded.
The Director of the Lagos State University School of Basic and Advanced Studies (LASUSBAS), Professor Yunus DAUDA, highlighted the University’s tangible commitment to students' success, detailing recent infrastructure upgrades which include: a new 150-seater Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre (the only one in the Badagry division), renovated classrooms and hostels, a new clinic ambulance, solar energy installations, and enhanced security with CCTV coverage across the campus.
Professor Dauda also disclosed plans for further expansion including a potential upgrade of the CBT Centre to meet the 250-seat requirement for national examinations, in line with the JUPEB Board’s planned transition to Computer-Based Testing later this year.
The event was both informative and celebratory, featuring a vibrant *Sangbeto masquerade performance* by the host community and a musical performance by LASUSBAS students. The performances underscored the University’s strong connection to local culture and the creative talents of its students.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Adedire Clinton AYOTOMIWA expressed appreciation for the institution’s continuous support.
In his words, “LASUSBAS has empowered us to rise above difficulties." His address reflected a constructive partnership between students and the University Management, as he engaged positively with the leadership on the need for improved classroom facilities, further highlighting the open channels of communication within the LASU community.
The comprehensive orientation programme equipped students with essential knowledge for their academic journey, covering academic ethics, campus security and safety, career guidance, library services, health services, and other key student support services.
The ceremony reinforced LASU’s reputation as an institution that demands excellence while deliberately building an enabling environment for success by combining discipline, development, and student engagement in its mission to nurture the next generation of leaders.
