LASU’s 13th Governing Council Concludes Strategic 3-Day Retreat, Outlines 4-Year Roadmap
The 13th Governing Council of Lagos State University (LASU) has successfully concluded a three-day strategic retreat, setting the course for its tenure as the apex decision-making body of the institution.

The retreat, themed “Purposeful Governance: Charting a Strategic Roadmap for LASU,” was held from Friday, 16th to Sunday, 18th January 2026 at the BON Hotel, Ikeja.
The opening ceremony saw Hon. Tolani Sule, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, commend the Council and University Management for organizing a timely retreat shortly after their inauguration by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration between Council and Management, noting that open communication and mutual trust are essential for institutional excellence.
Barrister Babatunde Ogala, SAN, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, outlined specific roadmaps for the Council anchored on accountability, integrity, and transparency. He highlighted strategic advantages LASU enjoys due to its location, urging the university to leverage opportunities in the Blue Economy, Dangote Refinery, shipping, and aviation sectors to achieve national and global relevance.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, underscored the need for LASU to continually reposition itself to meet evolving global standards and national priorities, emphasizing that the retreat provided a platform for Council and Management to align on a shared vision.
The retreat featured lectures from renowned thought leaders:
- Emeritus Professor Peter Okebukola, OFR, spoke on University Governance, urging ethical leadership, quality-focused standards, societal engagement, and global competitiveness.
- Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun, OFR, delivered insights on Ethics in University Governance, drawing from his experience as former Pro-Chancellor.
- Dr. Laila St. Matthew-Daniel presented on Stress Management, highlighting the role of emotional intelligence in leadership effectiveness.
Participants also engaged in an extensive discussion and brainstorming session on the Vision, Mission, 4-Year Action Plan, and Roadmap for the Council, facilitated by Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic. The session produced a comprehensive roadmap to guide Council activities over the next four years.

The retreat commenced with the 144th Statutory Meeting on Friday and concluded on Sunday, 18th January 2026, with the departure of participants, having successfully set a clear strategic direction for LASU’s governance and development.
