PALM-TREEs, a comprehensive initiative valued at over 5 million Canadian dollars, is funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (UK-FCDO) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). This project involves collaboration among 16 institutions across Africa and the United Kingdom, with the University of Cape Town leading the consortium.
Prof. Grace Oloukoi’s role within PALM-TREEs focuses on employing lived experiences methodology to assess climate risks in local communities. Specifically, her research spans urban and regional scales in Lagos and the Middle Belt of Nigeria. Together with colleagues from the University of Lagos and the Nigerian Institute for Social Economic Research (NISER), Prof. Oloukoi aims to address climate-related challenges such as flooding, heat stress, and drought. The research seeks to inform inclusive adaptation policies that consider the diverse social identities within these marginalized communities.
The project also supports Early Career Scientists (ECS) through doctoral and postdoctoral research opportunities, contributing to capacity building in climate adaptation across Africa.
The Management of Lead City University has lauded Prof. Grace Oloukoi for her achievement and affirmed its commitment to supporting the successful execution of the project. This milestone is expected to enhance global recognition for Lead City University and underscore its dedication to impactful research in Nigeria.
