Meet Professor Hadiza Usman Ma’aji, Northern Nigeria First Female Professor of Clinical Pharmacy

Professor Hadiza Usman Ma’aji has made history as the first female professor of Clinical Pharmacy from Northern Nigeria, breaking barriers and paving the way for women in both academia and healthcare.

Her career is a remarkable blend of scholarship, leadership, and dedication to the advancement of pharmaceutical education.

 

Her academic journey began at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where she earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy. She went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Clinical Pharmacy from the University of Ibadan, followed by a Ph.D. in Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Management from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Currently, she serves as a senior lecturer and Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Administration at Ahmadu Bello University. Professor Ma’aji is known for her cutting-edge research in pharmaceutical care for mental health, drug information services, and pharmacy education. With over 15 peer-reviewed publications, her work continues to shape the field both in Nigeria and beyond.

 

Beyond her academic achievements, Professor Ma’aji has held over 11 leadership roles, earning widespread respect for her mentorship, commitment to faculty growth, and support for holistic student development.

She is married to Aliyu Ma’aji, who holds the traditional title of Ma’ajin Zazzau (Treasurer of the Zaria Emirate), and together they are blessed with four children.

 

Professor Hadiza Ma’aji’s journey is one of perseverance, purpose, and groundbreaking impact — a source of inspiration to young pharmacists, particularly women, across Northern Nigeria and beyond.
